Why Are Eye Exams Important?​

Keeping up with your regular eye exams is just as important as any other checkup. During this exam, we can identify if you have vision problems that require correction and diagnose any underlying eye conditions.


Some eye diseases may not show symptoms, so a regular eye exam is essential. It is recommended that adults attend an eye exam about every 2 years, but frequency can vary by individual.

Our Tech-Driven Approach ​

To give our patients a quality eye exam, we use a variety of technology to view all parts of the eye. Our practices uses a few key devices, depending on each patient’s requirements and the parts of the eye that need to be viewed, to check for any eye conditions, diseases, and overall health.  Eye exams are a comprehensive look at your vision and eye health, but imaging technology will not cause any pain and discomfort and should only take a few minutes.

A phoropter uses a variety of lenses to detect errors in vision, also called refractive errors. In our practice, we use a digital phoropter, which can detect these refractive errors more quickly and efficiently.

Optos Retinal Imaging​

Optos retinal imaging is a wide-field imaging system that can capture around 50% more of the retina in an Optomap image. Retinal imaging uses lasers to take an image of the retina and blood vessels in the back of the eye, which can show if conditions such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy are present.

​Common Eye & Vision Concerns​

As we get older, managing our eye health and vision becomes important as eye conditions and diseases are more likely to pop up as we age.  However, a regular eye exam can help to identify any vision problems before they progress. There are some common eye and vision concerns that our optometrists check for during our comprehensive eye exams.

​Glaucoma​​​

Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases typically characterized by pressure in the eye and damage to the optic nerve. Glaucoma tends to develop in those over the age of 60. Glaucoma can be treated through special drops, laser treatments, or surgery.

​Age-Related Eye Disease

​Age-related eye disease, which is known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), tends to occur in those over 50 when the macula of the retina deteriorates, causing loss of central vision. In some cases, AMD may be treated with injections or even supplements.

Presbyopia​

Presbyopia is a condition where your vision starts to lose focus, and objects that are near become blurry. This tends to happen slowly over time and presents itself in those who are middle-aged. Correction, such as glasses or contact lenses, can help to correct presbyopia in patients.

Diabetic Eye Disease

Diabetic retinopathy is a disease that can cause vision loss in those with diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy causes leaking of the blood vessels in the retina, which can cause floaters or spots in vision.
A diabetic eye exam is important to check for diabetic retinopathy, and treatment can include surgery, laser or injection treatments.
